Robert S. Kocharian
Robert Kocharian was born on August 31, 1954, in Stepanakert.
He received his secondary education his home town.
In 1972-74 he served in the Soviet Army.
In 1982, Robert Kocharian graduated with distinction from Electro-Technical Department of Yerevan State Polytechnic Institute.
In 1971 Robert Kocharian started his professional career at Stepanakert Electro-Technical Factory. Having started as a turner, he was later promoted to the post of mechanical engineer.
In the 1980s he occupied various posts and positions in Nagorno Karabakh Komsomol (youth Communist) and Communist organs.
In 1989 and the 1990s he was electea deputy of Armenia's Supreme Soviet and member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet.
In 1991 Kocharian was elected a member of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic's Supreme Council (Parliament) of the first convocation.
From February 1988, Kocharian was one of the political leaders of the Artsakh National-Liberation Movement. He was member of the Krunk organization. After the organization was dissolved, he founded and headed the Miatsum [Unification] organization. Robert Kocharyan was one of the first to assume the responsibility of forming Nagorno Karabakh's security and defense system.
In August 1992 when almost half of the NKR's territory was under Azerbaijani occupation, Robert Kocharian became Chairman of the State Defense Committee and Prime Minister of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic. Within a short period of time strong will to mobilize all forces and liberate Artsakh changed the course of war.
On December 24, 1994, NKR Supreme Council elected Robert Kocharian President of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic.
In November 1996 he became President of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic by a popular vote.
On March 20, 1997, Robert Kocharian was appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia.
On March 30, 1998, Robert Kocharian was elected President of the Republic of Armenia in early presidential elections.
On March 5, 2003, Robert Kocharian was reelected to the post of the President of the Republic of Armenia.
Robert Kocharian is fluent in Russian and English.
Robert Kocharyan is holder of Golden Eagle order of the Hero of Artsakh.
He is married and has three children.
Arkady A. Ghoukassian
Arkady A. Ghoukassian was born on June 22, 1957 in Stepanakert.
In 1974 he finished Stepanakert secondary school N 8, in 1979 graduated from the Department of Russian Language and Literature of the Yerevan State University with a degree in linguistics.
He started his working career in 1980 as a corespondent for "Soviet Karabagh" newspaper, becoming its Deputy Editor-in-Chief in 1981.
Since 1988 - an active participant of Karabakh movement.
In 1992 Arkady Ghoukasian was elected to the first Parliament of the Nagorno Karabagh Republic. In September of 1992, he was appointed the Political Adviser to the Chairman of the State Defense Committee (SDC), and headed the NKR delegations during OSCE negotiations with Azerbaijan.
In July, 1993 Ministry of Foreign Affairs was founded in NKR. A. Ghoukassian became the first Foreign Minister of the Nagorno Karabagh Republic. During his being the head of the MFA Karabakh diplomacy has reached serious positive results for NKR in negotiation process. His contribution in de facto international recognition of Nagorno Karabakh as a party to the conflict is especially considerable.
During the NKR presidential extra elections in september 1997 Arkady Ghoukassian was elected President of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic,winning the absolute majority of votes.
On August 11, 2002 Ghoukasian was re-elected President of the Nagorno Karabagh Republic.
Ghoukassian is an honorary member of a number of international Academies, in particular, the Academy of Sciences on Security, Defence and Law order, the Academy of Sciences on International relations, the Academy of Sciences on Nature and Society, the Academy of Sciences on National Security Problems and the Academy of Spiritual Unity of Nations.
Arkady Ghoukassian is holder of Golden Eagle order of the Hero of Artsakh.
Ghoukassian is married and has two children.
